A tenor “setting the tone” (Pittsburgh Music Alliance) with “affecting line” (Boston Classical Review), Matthew Dean anchors Midwest vocal chamber projects and performs nationally as an oratorio soloist. He has served as artist in residence at Chicago’s Rockefeller Chapel since 2005, where the Tribune’s John von Rhein has praised his “firm vocalism and beautiful timbre." Dean draws on his academic background in medieval art in developing programs with the Schola Antiqua, The Newberry Consort, and The Rose Ensemble. He originated the tenor roles in James Kallembach’s St. John Passion and Sven-David Sandström's Magnificat, and his voice can be found on recordings for Naxos, Discantus, and Permelia Records.
A founding member of Golosá Russian Choir, Matt has chased folksongs and friends around southern Siberia, and performed folktunes with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and at the Ravinia Festival. He is also featured on folk wind instruments, especially his Irish whistle by Chris Abell, in local services and concerts. An arts management leader, he heads the Sounds of Faith initiative for Harran Productions Foundation and co-directs The Rookery men's choir.
